The Inadequacy of Labels Wednesday, Jul 9 2008

You know how much I absolutely love discussing theology. Even more so, I love teaching it. Even more so, I love learning theology. I really am blessed to be called by God to devote my life to studying and teaching His Word! And after more than twenty years of ministry I am still being transformed by and reformed to His Truth. I am often humbled as I open the sacred Scriptures and find myself in a fresh season of learning something new about our Lord. And when I get opportunity I try to preach and teach and write from an overflow of joy that has poured into my heart from the Spirit.

I try my best, against the limitations of my humanity and the failings of my own flesh, to effectively communicate that which I have come to understand by the Spirit’s power. I long to share what I see in Scripture; and to guide others in exploring God’s Word for themselves. Much of the time, I have felt gifted in teaching others. It is definitely a gift and not a skill since the subject matter is spiritual. (more…)

Dispensationalism Ends in Failure Monday, Jul 7 2008

Clarence Larkin wrote “The Greatest Book on Dispensational Truth in the World” (which I think is an accurate title; more accurate than you could imagine). On page 96 of that book Larkin explains the conclusion of Dispensational Millennialism, “From this we see that the “Millennial Dispensation,’ like all the six Dispensations before it, will end in failure. God Wants All to Repent Saturday, Mar 8 2008

Many Christians who are struggling with Calvinism find 2 Peter 3:9 to be a difficult passage to understand.

2 Peter 3:9 says, “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.” (ESV)

Does this mean that if God had His way then no one would go to Hell but everyone would repent? Well, no, not exactly. First of all, to interpret this verse that way (more…)

One Way to Heaven Wednesday, Feb 27 2008

Most people futilely try to get the heaven two different ways. Some choose the irreligious way and others the religious way.

The irreligious are essentially hedonist and can be liberal. They are not necessarily mean people; in fact, I know many very kind and wonderful irreligious, agnostics, and atheists. But the irreligious are full of hypocrisy: they claim freedom but are slaves to their sin. Sin has corrupted their body and their relationships. They get tired of it but can’t get free from it (John 8:34).

The other false way that people try to take to get to heaven is the religious way. The religious are moralist, filled with legalism and rules. Even though the religious are also very kind and wonderful, they too are very hypocritical; for they have tried to impress God with their obedience. They try to (more…)

The Davidic Covenant Wednesday, Nov 8 2006

THE DAVIDIC COVENANT PROMISED

  • The Davidic Covenant is recorded in the following O.T. passages:
    2 Samuel 7:1-17; 1 Chronicles 17:1-27; 1 Kings 8:12-21
  • 2 Samuel 7:2 – David wishes to build a temple for God’s presence. God respects David’s desires (1 King 8:18-19) but has different plans (2 Samuel 7:4-16). God reminded David that He had always dwelt among His people (v.6). This foreshadows Christ’s tabernacling among His people (John 1:14).
  • 2 Samuel 7:8-9a describes God’s sovereignty in the Davidic Covenant. All of God’s covenants have been based on His sovereignty. Indeed, the ultimate purpose of the covenants is to reveal God’s glory.

Monergistic Regeneration Wednesday, Apr 12 2006

The doctrine of justification by faith alone was debated during the Reformation on the deeper level of monergistic regeneration. This technical term must be explained.

Monergism is derived from a combination of a prefix and a root. The prefix mono is used frequently in English to indicate that which is single or alone. The root comes from the verb “to work.” The erg of monergy comes into our language to indicate a unit of work or energy. When we put the prefix and root together, we get monergy or monergism. Monergism is something that operates by itself or works alone as the sole active party. (more…)

Who In the World is the World Saturday, Apr 8 2006

If the word World must be defined as universal in John 3:16, then consider the problems in John 3:26, 32.

In verse 26, ALL does not mean everybody.
In verse 32, NO ONE does not mean the absence of everybody.

No, world in verse 16 is defined in verse 17 as believers. Yes, it is true that God does love all of His creatures, but that is not what verse 16 is talking about. It is a commentary on the Bronze Serpent (see the context), thus it is talking about atonement (GOD GAVE HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON). In fact, John the Apostle is pointing out in his gosple that God’s salvific love is not just for Jews only like Nicodemus but for Gentiles as well.

So what is the context? (more…)

    God is Self-Centered Wednesday, Oct 12 2005

We just don’t like people who seem to be very enamored by their own skill or power or looks.

  • We get tired of hearing the fisherman who brags about his big catch as if he is the only one to ever catch a big fish.
  • We don’t like egotistic salesman who goes on and on about how he is the best in the business.
  • We disapprove of holier-than-thou bloggers who post such long disquisitions that the scroll bar on the right side looks like a minus sign.
  • We don’t like scholars who try to show off their specialized knowledge or who recite for us all their recent publications and lectureships.
  • We don’t like it when children play one-upmanship hour after hour.
  • But when we think of people like that we also think of Jeremiah 9:23-24 (NASB95) Thus says the Lord, “Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of (more…)
